Peter Schwartz's Story of His First
Visit to the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary

Peter Schwartz: In the summer of 1980 I was vacationing in California and decided to make contact with Avatar Adi Da's devotees. I had read a couple of books and magazines but had never met anyone back home in Boston who was a practitioner of Adidam.

I was a person with no religious or spiritual background, and my personal search had never really led me into those areas. Politics, academics, art, and the human potential movement were where I wandered — looking for but never finding fully satisfying answers or possibilities. Somehow I was drawn to find out more about Avatar Adi Da Samraj.

I had called ahead and arranged to meet one of Avatar Adi Da's devotees at a local center. After talking with me for a while, this devotee told me about a special celebration at the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary and asked if I would like to attend.

I accepted the invitation and showed up two weeks later, finding my way through the back roads of Lake County, California, to the gates of the Sanctuary.

I was as raw as anyone could be. I knew very little about Avatar Adi Da's Teaching, had never been to an ashram, and had no experience relating to a spiritual Teacher or even to the devotees of a Guru. But there was an aura of friendliness and warmth on the Sanctuary that helped me relax and feel welcomed.

I attended all the events and particularly enjoyed the seminars under the shade trees, where elements of the Teaching and the practice of Adidam were discussed. People went out of their way to introduce me to devotees from Boston.

The management of the celebration particularly impressed me. Everything ran smoothly, and communications were open and humorous. There were many attendants who were there to serve and who also, merely by the way they spoke and acted, were reminders that I was at a sacred place. I had never experienced anything like that.

When the day came to an end, I departed and continued my travels through California and back to the east coast. It was hard to put my finger on what the experience meant to me, but I soon discovered that something had definitely happened.

On a train from New York to Boston, within two weeks of leaving the Sanctuary, a rapid series of three instantaneous "revelations" tacitly showed me I could no longer pursue the work I thought was my life's purpose.

In response to the anxious queries of my friends, all I was able to say was that my decision had something to do with spiritual life. No one I knew was really able to relate to what I was going through, but I knew in a fundamental way that it was right.

While maintaining a link to Avatar Adi Da's devotees in Boston, I continued to be absorbed in the realms of various life-possibilities.

Finally, after two years, all of that mysteriously played out. I came to understand with intuitive clarity that it was the Spiritual Transmission of Avatar Adi Da, operating at a completely unconscious level and initiated while I was sitting at the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary, that had enabled the turnabout in my disposition and life.

That was how the proof of a Spiritual Reality, and of Who Avatar Adi Da really Is, began to manifest for me.
